My Home Is My Castle:
Deciding Where to Live in Retirement

Before you retire, you should take into serious consideration where you want to live. Will you be staying in your current home? Decided to move to a smaller place? How about the options of moving to a retirement community? All these avenues should be explored in planning for your future.

Stay Where You Are

The house you are currently living in has become your home. You’ve raised your children there, spent most of your marriage there, and couldn’t fathom going anywhere else. This is a viable option in your retirement plan. Most retirees will not have a monthly mortgage payment to deal with if they stay in their current residence. The safety and serenity of staying in the place you call home is definitely a worthwhile option.

Make It Smaller

You love your home, but it’s just too big. There’s no need to live in a five bedroom house when it’s just the two of you, so you’ve decided to move to a smaller place. Take into consideration both your selling costs and the cost of a new home when planning for this avenue of retirement. Will you be able to cover all the new home expenses with the sale of the old one? Will you be taking on a mortgage payment which must be calculated into your monthly expenses? There is also the option of moving to a retirement community. These are usually small apartments or rooms that do not require much upkeep, but allow you the self-sufficiency you enjoy.

Rest Home

Rest Homes or Assisted Living Facilities are options for those who need some help with daily activities, but want to retain their independence. This is an option for those who do not need total care or skilled nursing. It is also a preventative measure for having to move to a nursing home early on.

Nursing Home

During retirement, you may require nursing care. This is where nursing homes come into play. This may be an option if you have a serious health issue or need constant care in relation to your daily activities. For those who do not want to leave their homes, there is also the home care option wherein an external agency provides nursing care to you. As time goes on, you may need constant supervision.
